The SM4 family consists of two models: The SM4BAT FS and the SM4 (acoustic). The FS model records in full spectrum. The ultrasonic recorder has a single microphone with cable and the acoustic model has two integral microphones.
Designed around the size of four D-sized batteries, the SM4 family of recorders includes the smallest and lightest, weatherproof recorders available. Moulded in polycarbonate, the SM4 is less than half the weight and size of the old SM3. This custom-designed enclosure allows for multiple units to be packed into a backpack. In addition to being completely weatherproof, the enclosure has an integrated and lockable security cover.
Why a single channel for bats? Many of our clients use single channel recording for their work. If you need two channels for bats, we advise that you buy two of the SM4BAT recorders. Why? The cost of two SM4BATs is not much more than the cost of an old SM3BAT with an extra microphone. With two SM4BAT recorders deployed, you get more placement flexibility.
How long can you deploy an SM4BAT? Featuring a new, low power microprocessor, single channel recording format and running on 4 D-cell batteries, the SM4BAT models have the longest deployment times available – up to one month in Full Spectrum. Deployment times can be extended even further with external power sources.
Martin's thoughts: The SM4BAT FS gives our clients the option of an easy to use and robust long-term passive recorder. If you prefer full spectrum recorders then the SM4BAT FS will suit your needs admirably. If you prefer zero crossing, you can still get zero crossing files from the full spectrum files if you wish, but not vice versa. For acoustic recordings only, the SM4 acoustic recorder will be hard to beat (more details at the bottom of the page).
