Composters & Composting

Wormeries & Worm Composting

The Beehive composters are both attractive and functional The basic composting box is a simple alternative to other types of composter The Modular Composter can be added to as your needs increase, or just have one bay, it's up to you

The main purpose of a garden composter is to keep the compost heap tidy and under control. But a composter's design also needs to balance several opposing requirements - it should be tough enough to hold quite a weight of compost, yet be easy to disassemble when the time comes to 'turn' the heap or harvest the compost; it needs to be open enough to let air circulate, yet closed enough to keep the compost warm and dry. Each of these composters meets these conflicting criteria in its own way, meaning that one of them will be just right for your garden.
The standard composter is the Compost Box, its pre-cut slats slot together in a few seconds, it comes in two sizes and does everything you could ever want from a composter.
When appearance is everything, the Beehive Composters are the products to look at.
Finally the daddy of them all is the Modular Composter which allows extra add-on bays to be fitted so it can expand as your composting needs increase.
Worms are nature's most efficient composters, so it's no surprise that a healthy population of worms in your compost heap can help improve things. If you already have an established compost heap it's quite likely that some composting worms will already have taken up residence. To get the full benefit, though, you'll need to add a lot more, about 1kg of worms per cubic metre of heap is about right, and we can supply these for you.

Beehive Composter

Our beehive composter is so attractive that there's no need to hide it away at the bottom of the garden! Nestle it in amongst your vegetable patch or flower garden, anywhere you can add your waste conveniently and have your compost ready to use when you want it. There's a special door at the bottom that lets you harvest your compost easily and, if you want a whole batch of compost at once, the four sections simply lift apart.
Made from sustainable, treated timber, each preassembled layer simply stacks easily on top of the next. The clever design allows air to circulate within the bin.

Wormeries & Worm Composting

The Can-O-Worms is one of the best wormeries on the market The Desktop Wormery lets children observe the worms in action The Waste Juggler is an 'all-in-one' wormery The Worm Factory is a tray composter, like the Can-O-Worms, but a simpler design Worm World is a tabletop wormery for children

Here is the perfect solution to composting kichen waste... organic waste is converted into rich, dark compost, a valuable resource in itself. Worm-assisted composting is a wholly natural process and we supply only native worm species so there's no possibility of causing any environmental damage. Worm-assisted composting is fully self-sustaining, it reduces waste volumes by up to 80%, it neutralises odours, it tackles a wide variety of wastes, the list of benefits just keeps on going. In short, worm-assisted composting solves problems rather than creating them.
What is a wormery?
Worms can help speed up composting wherever there's organic waste to be found: from taking care of a few vegetable scraps in the kitchen to digesting the fallen leaves in a mighty jungle, there's a worm that has evolved to do the work. To keep things simple, however, we define wormeries as self-contained systems, usually about the size of a small dustbin, that are used mainly to compost kitchen waste.
We have have two wormeries available: these are the Worm Factory, and the best-selling Can-O-Worms.
Being so small a wormery can be put almost anywhere - most customers like to keep theirs as close to the kitchen door as possible so that dropping their waste into the bin is easy. Anything that has lived and died can be composted by worms, but best results are obtained with soft organic wastes such as vegetable peelings, tea leaves, coffee grounds, stale bread, pet hairs and even vacuum cleaner dust! Due to their small size, the wormeries are not really suitable for composting large amounts of garden waste such as prunings. (But we do have a fine range of Garden Composters available if that's what you want to do).

Please contact us if you have questions about worm composters.
