BIRDS
Blue Tit
Blue Tit
One of six members of the genus Parus, the blue tit is one of our most familiar birds, as it is to be found in most British gardens. Primarily a woodland bird, it has adopted our gardens because of their similarity to woodland clearings. Feeding mainly on insects, it will also eat seeds and fruit, especially during the winter.
Coal Tit
Coal Tit
The smallest British tit at 11cm, the coal tit is a bird of the tree canopy in both broadleaf and coniferous woodland, but often seen at bird feeders, especially during the winter. Easily recognised by the white nape and generally dull appearance,
Great Tit
Great Tit
A common bird of woodland, hedgerows and gardens, the great tit is a familiar bird to most people. Its black and white head, greenish back and yellow breast with black stripe are distinctive.
Chaffinch
Chaffinch
Our commonest finch, the chaffinch is found in many different habitats from woodland to farmland. Primarily a seed-eater, the chaffinch has a robust, conical beak, which in the male is silver-coloured.
Robin
Robin
A very common, and much loved, bird; the robin is widespread throughout Europe, but is much more approachable in Britain than in many places on the continent. Often to be found where garden maintenance is taking place, the robin will pick up worms and other invertebrates from the gardener's feet, and can be persuaded to feed from the hand
Siskin
Siskin
A small greenish-yellow finch of coniferous or mixed woods, the siskin has a forked tail, and generally striated appearance. The male has a distinctive black cap and chin, which the female lacks
