MAMMALS
Red Deer Stag
Red Deer
The red deer is our largest native land mammal. It is a woodland animal, but often it is forced to live in exposed areas, such as mountains and moorland. Because of this, British red deer are some of the smallest of their species on the planet. Where red deer live in their natural habitat, woodland, they achieve their largest sizes.
Red Squirrel
Red Squirrel
The red squirrel, or common squirrel if you translate the scientific name, is now becoming a very rare animal, as the introduced American grey squirrel S. carolinensis continues to increase its range. The red squirrel is now extinct throughout most of England and Wales, and large parts of Ireland and central Scotland.
Feral Goat
Feral Goat
Usually inhabiting rocky hills, cliffs and islands, the feral goat is descended from domesticated wild goats. Many British feral goats are long-haired and piebald, and are easily recognised.
Pine Marten
Pine Marten
The pine marten belongs to the same group of animals as the stoats, weasels, mink, polecat, otter and badger. All of these animals have an elongated body and short legs, and all are predators of other animals.
