Common Hazel
Common Hazel is widely distributed. It's fruit (Hazel nut or cob) is a favourite food of mice and squirrels in the autumn (August and September). Both will travel some distance, climbing into the bush to get at the cobs before they are ripe; and a search on the ground will reveal nuts opened using the method characteristic of the species concerned.
