Comment from a client:
"My bat detector microphone failed during a dawn survey and knew that I had a group of dusk surveys starting in two days time. I was not in a good place as I did not have a spare, but my equipment was less than a year old.
After my survey I contacted Martin by email and he called me back on the same day, a few hours later, after a quick nap. He told me he did not have a part in stock, but had already contacted the supplier on my behalf.
The next day I received a replacement part, free of charge and express delivered from Switzerland. I thought it was amazing, and could not believe it was resolved so quickly.
Due to Martin's exceptional service I was good to go with the surveys, and I really would like to thank Martin and Wildlife Countryside Services for making the dusk surveys happen."

Pettersson D500X bat detector Pettersson D500X bat detector - With our Exclusive 2 Year Warranty!
The D500X is an ultrasound recording unit intended for long-term, unattended recording of bat calls. In contrast to time expansion bat detectors, the D500X records full-spectrum ultrasound in real time with virtually no gaps between recordings. The recorder is equipped with four slots for CF cards, which typically makes it possible to leave the unit in the field for more than a month. The triggering system allows the device to automatically start recording as a sound is detected.
The recording length can be selected in steps from 0.3 up to 20 seconds. In order not to fill the card too fast at locations with high activity, a minimum time between two recordings can be applied. The recorder is normally operated in a low-power mode with no pre-trigger (i.e. the recording starts as the sound exceeds the chosen threshold level), but both pre-and post-trigger functions are available in the standard (not low-power) mode. The D500X stores the bat calls in time stamped wav files.
The D500X comes in a rugged and weather-protected aluminium housing, and various accessories are available, such as an external microphone with extension cable up to 100 m and a soft protection case with hooks to hang the unit in e.g. a tree.
Type: Direct, high-speed recording; Microphone: Advanced electret, jack for external microphone; Frequency range: 15 – 190 kHz (500 kHz sampling rate, high-pass filter enabled) <5 – 190 kHz (500 kHz sampling rate, high-pass filter disabled); Connections: External microphone, external trigger, external DC supply; Timer: Four on/off periods per day; Batteries: 4 x AA size, Alkaline or NiMH recommended; External DC supply: 4.5-8 V, typically ca. 200 mA (average, when recording), depends on CF card type and number of CF cards; Size: 165 x 170 x 53 mm, excl. connectors etc.; Weight: 1.2 kg incl. batteries and front panel cover

Pettersson D1000X bat detector Pettersson D1000X bat detector - With our Exclusive 2 Year Warranty!
The D1000X is a professional ultrasound detector, based on the latest technology. The detector has heterodyne, frequency division and time expansion systems and also a built-in 16-bit recording system using a Compact Flash card as storage medium. It is equipped with Pettersson's well-known, high-quality capacitance microphone which has been further improved to give lower noise, wider dynamic range and lower distortion.
The D1000X has a built-in "recorder", relieving the user from the hassle of operating a separate recording device or laptop with connecting cables. It can be configured to work in a variety of operating modes, but thanks to the use of "Profiles", switching between different modes is made instantly. Each profile contains all the selectable settings such as sampling rate, triggering mode, time expansion factor and LED intensity and can be prepared in advance and saved in the detector.
At any time, either the direct ultrasonic signal, the heterodyne signal or the frequency division signal can be recorded onto the CF-card. Spoken comments can be recorded by speaking into the microphone while recording in the direct mode, or in a special comment recording mode (at a lower sampling rate). The recording time is limited only by the available space on the CF-card. Upon completion of a recording in the direct mode, the signal will be automatically replayed in time expanded form, if this function is enabled. Time expansion factors from 1 (original speed) to 30 can be chosen. The recordings can be made by manually starting and stopping the recording or through level-activated (and optional frequency selective) triggering. In the latter case, the detector can be set up for unattended capture of calls. Pre- and post-triggering modes with a variety of different settings can be used.
The wav sound files on the CF-card are stamped with date and time and can be read directly on a PC, using a standard CF-card reader. The D1000X also has a serial GPS input, making it possible to save GPS position data in the files.
Type: Heterodyne, frequency division (x10), time expansion and direct recording; Frequency range: 5 - 235 kHz (frequency division and heterodyne), 5 kHz – 0.4 x sampling frequency (time expansion and direct recording) - Activating the high-pass filter results in a lower frequency limit of about 20 kHz.; Heterodyne freq. resolution: 0.1 kHz (f<17.8 kHz), 0.2 kHz (18-43 kHz), 0.5 kHz (43.5-107 kHz), 1 kHz (108-235 kHz); Headphones output: 3.5 mm stereo jack, load impedance 32 ohms or greater; HF/MEM output: 3.5 mm stereo jack, load impedance 500 ohms or greater, ca 600 mVrms at 0 dB; Batteries: 5 x AA size, Alkaline or NiMH recommended; External DC supply: 7-10 V, 250 mA (average), 700 mA (peak); Size: 170 x 80 x 35 mm, excl. microphone; Weight: 600 g incl. batteries

BatSound real-time spectrogram software
Analysis of the bat calls may be required in some situations e.g. in order to positively identify a certain species. The software BatSound is an efficient, high-performance tool for various types of sound analysis. It is suitable for sound analysis in general, but also includes a number of features particularly useful to analyze bat calls recorded from a bat detector or recorded directly with a D500X or D1000X ultrasound detector.
BatSound uses any Windows compatible sound card for sound input and output, and supports sound formats up to 32 bits with one or two channels (mono/stereo) and sampling frequencies up to 192 kHz (possibly limited by the sound card). The common WAV format is used to store files. It is also possible to open sound files with other formats such as mp3 and wma if the corresponding codecs have been installed on the computer.
Multiple windows with different sound files can be opened at the same time, facilitating comparison of signals and analysis results. Printing and picture file export through Windows clipboard (BMP and WMF formats). Wide range zoom function. Optional time and frequency compensation of time expanded signals to show the original time and frequency. Play Speed function to implement time expansion playback of high-speed sound files from D500X/D1000X detectors. Open Next/Previous command makes it easy to scan through all files in a folder. Very useful for browsing files obtained through unattended recording. Automatic parameter extraction feature, calculates max/min frequency, pulse duration etc. Optional grid lines in most diagrams. Clipboard export of analysis results. In the Virtual Bat Detector mode, sound files of time expanded or high speed recorded sounds are replayed at the original speed, emulating a heterodyne bat detector. Perfect for learning how to identify bats using a heterodyne detector, for classroom demonstrations etc. The Automatic Recording mode makes it possible to have the computer record sounds automatically. The desired threshold level is selected and the computer will start recording to a sound file as soon as the signal exceeds this level. Many parameters are available to fine-tune this mode, e.g. by setting limits for the minimum pulse length, total recording time, maximum number of pulses to record etc. Frequency-selective triggering is also available, to avoid recording undesired signals.
System requirements: Intel or AMD 1 GHz or faster processor; RAM: 1 GB minimum (also depends on the operating system); Windows compatible sound card; >1 GB of free hard disk space; Windows XP/SP3, Vista/SP1 or 7 operating system. Windows, Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 are registered trademarks of Microsoft Corporation.

IMPORTANT! We have noticed that there is a mistake - rather an important one. Figure 7.3 is supposed to show the minimum frequencies (Fmin) of FM/CF bats but what it actually shows is the frequency containing maximum energy (fMaxE). You can find details of all errors found so far here.
Is That a Bat? Is That a Bat?
The occurrence of non-bat sounds during bat surveys can be distracting, intriguing or annoying. Recordings can include difficult to ID species of bat but also sounds not related to bats. This can be especially true when noise triggers such as insects, small mammals or birds look like bat-related noise. Therefore, only knowing what bats sound like is not enough. It's extremely useful to know what other sources of noise look and sound like within the same soundscape. This book will help bat workers, in whatever environment they're in, to be more confident in recognising, categorising and dismissing other sounds. The book includes a substantial downloadable sound library (.wav format) that readers can listen to by ear or process through sound analysis software.
Written by Neil Middleton, a well-respected bat worker and author of Social Calls of the Bats of Britain & Ireland, as well as The Effective Ecologist.

British Bat Calls British Bat Calls
Knowledge of bat echolocation, calls and identification using bat detectors and programs such as BatSound has grown significantly in the last decade. In this practical guide Jon Russ and contributors (Kate Barlow, Philip Briggs & Sandie Sowler) present the latest data in a clear and concise manner.
The book covers topics such as the properties of sound; how bats use sound; bat detection methods; recording devices; analysis software; recording techniques and call analysis. For each species found in the British Isles, information is given on distribution; emergence times; flight and foraging behaviour; habitat; and echolocation including parameters for common measurements. Calls are described in the context of the different technologies used (heterodyne, frequency division and time expansion). Various spectrograms are displayed for each species using examples from both BatSound and AnaLook. An echolocation key is included with the book.

Social Calls of the Bats of Britain and Ireland Social Calls of the Bats of Britain and Ireland
Bats are fascinating mammals about which we still have much to learn. As well as using ultrasonic echolocation calls for orientation and while foraging, they also have a complex array of vocalisations for communication. These are known as social calls and are an essential component of their colonial lifestyle.
This book brings together the current state of knowledge of social calls relating to the bat species occurring within Britain and Ireland, with some additional examples from species represented elsewhere in Europe. It includes access to a downloadable library of calls to be used in conjunction with the book.
