William Wordsworth
(1770-1850)
THE DAFFODILS

I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced; but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:
A poet could not but be gay,
In such a jocund company:
I gazed - and gazed - but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:

For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.

Wordsworth's daffodils are the native wild daffodil Narcissus pseudonarcissus, which is becoming increasingly popular with gardeners, especially with the concerns over the possible replacement of the rare wild daffodils by more competitive cultivated daffodils.
Similar concerns surround our native wild bluebell Scilla non-scripta, which faces competition and hybridisation from the Spanish bluebell, which is often sold in garden centres simply as 'bluebell', leading gardeners to inadvertently introduce a non-native species to their gardens and woodlands.
Further confusion is caused by the so-called 'English bluebell', which is not the bluebell found wild in England (or the rest of the UK). The native wild UK bluebell is Scilla non-scripta, a.k.a. Hyacinthoides non-scripta, so if it is not marked as such, it probably isn't the native species.

The only bluebells and daffodils supplied by us are the native type, nursery-grown, so you can be sure you are not contributing to the decline of our native species.
We can also now supply native bluebell bulbs and seeds in bulk from one of the few licensed sites in the UK - please ask for details.

WILD DAFFODILS

I wandered alone into the wood,
As the springtime sun removed the dew,
But were these blooms that inside stood,
The daffodils that Wordsworth knew?
Tall, bright and stiff upon the floor;
A plastic one would dance much more.

But, here along the grass I know,
The daffs that once caught Wordsworth's eye,
Are outdone by cultivars that grow,
Like vigorous leylandii.
With squirrels, reds are swamped by grey;
But will narcissi go that way?

So who can conquer this fear;
That these wild blooms will never thrive?
'Tis you, and you, so give a cheer,
With your help they can survive!
But where can you obtain these flowers?
Here's a thought - buy ours!
