The Echo Meter EM3 is the latest addition to the Wildlife Acoustics product family. This active handheld bat detector and recorder is easy to hold, lightweight and requires no
additional hardware. Customers can:
- Monitor bat calls with headphones or the built-in speaker.
- Record 16-bit full spectrum in our compressed WAC format or record an individual WAV file for each bat pass.
- Optionally, record files compatible with Titley Scientific™ AnaBat™ sequence files for analysis in AnaLookW™. No conversion needed!
- While recording, simultaneously listen to bat calls in the method of your choice: Heterodyne, Frequency Division or our patent pending Real Time Expansion.
- Built-in real-time spectrogram displays current and recent bat passes in expanded or compressed mode to see a history of bat calls.
- Zoom in and out of the vertical and horizontal axis of the spectrogram for recently heard bat calls while continuing to monitor and record.
- Playback bat calls in Time Expansion mode at the desired speed to hear details of the call.
- Set preferences to the most flexible heterodyne detector on the market:
- Auto-Het feature automatically selects the frequency based on the call dynamics.
- Program up to four frequency presets to rapidly tune into a bat call.
- Fine tune any frequency setting with easy to use button navigation.
- Categorize or tag a bat call in real-time in one of four categories to facilitate post processing.
- User selectable sample rate of 256kHz or 384kHz.
- Capture voice notes and bat passes in the same trigger for direct correlation.

Combining Full Spectrum and Zero Crossing Recording Technologies in the Same Device
Wildlife Acoustics, Inc., the leading supplier of acoustic monitoring systems for endangered and threatened wildlife species around the world, announces the next generation
terrestrial ultrasonic passive acoustic recorder, the Song Meter SM2BAT+.
"With the SM2BAT+, for the first time bat biologists now have a solution for ultrasonic bat monitoring that supports both full spectrum and zero crossing natively in the same product," said Ian Agranat,
President and CEO of Wildlife Acoustics. "We are providing the best of both worlds for half the price of the nearest competitor. Supporting both technologies ensures compatibility with all industry
standard bat analysis software. This is especially important now as bat monitoring guidelines are evolving worldwide."
The Song Meter SM2BAT+ now records natively in zero crossing mode without requiring post processing conversion. These files are not digitally created but instead use zero-crossing hardware. In zero
crossing mode, bat biologists can record over a month of nightly recordings using only the internal D batteries (longer with the Wildlife Acoustics Song Meter SM2 Power Adapter) and expect a 32GB card to
last for any deployment length.
For our full spectrum customers, Wildlife Acoustics reduced the post-data analysis time by enabling onboard filtering of triggered recordings. The SM2BAT+ in full spectrum mode now automatically
eliminates irrelevant files that don't have bat activity. The recordings are saved directly as WAV files and opened directly in analysis software without any conversion. As always, full spectrum customers
can digitally convert their files to zero crossing if they prefer to document both types of files.
With the new SM2BAT+ customers will continue to enjoy the other features of the Song Meter family including the two channel recording capability, flexible recording scheduler, weatherproof housing and
weatherproof microphones. The SM2BAT+ also features several mechanical improvements making it the most robust ultrasonic passive acoustic monitor on the market.
We have been asked about recording lesser horseshoe bats with the SM2BAT+. You have the option of using one channel with 384kHz to detect and see the full calls of the Lessor Horseshoe. Many of our
customers, however, would like to take advantage of the two channels when configured for recording with a sample rate at 192kHz. It is actually possible to still detect the Lessor Horseshoe in this
configuration as the sound is aliased into the range of detection. The call appears as a mirror image of the distinctive harmonic "folded down" and appearing at about 84kHz instead of 108kHz. The
fundamental shows as normal. Please open this file for an example.
